The meeting opened with a prayer led by Byron Sheets.
Jeanie Hetrick welcomed everyone and reviewed the following
highlights from the November GFA Board Meeting:
- Discussion of Isaiah 58:10-11 on true fasting. (...and
if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and
satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will
rise in the darkness, and your night will
become like the noonday. The LORD will guide
you always; he will satisfy your
needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen
your frame. You will be like a well-watered
garden, like a spring whose
waters never fail. NIV)
- Clarified the
executive meetings versus the closed sessions. The
executive meetings include the Chairman, Vice Chairman,
Superintendent, Secretary and each of the chairs for the committees.
Board decisions can be made in executive meetings. Closed
sessions are not full board meetings and just include the
chair person and chair committee members. Typically
GFA does not hold closed meetings.
- Student Affairs did not meet and so no reports were given. JoAnne
Warren is now chair since Dirk Tiller has resigned, and
Laura Holten has volunteered to co-chair.
- A sub-committee is working
on Ken Sheldon’s job description. Any
parents interested in being involved in this process should
let Ken know. This would be a good forum to discuss
the need for GFA’s Principal position.
- Glenn Koch reported on the status of the Centennial Campaign.
The Centennial Campaign (goal - $1.3 million) encompasses
the Endowment Fund (goal - $1 million); General Fund (goal
- $255,000.) and the Campaign costs ($45,000.) To date we
are at approximately $750,000.00 total.
- The Board purchased turkeys
for teachers and staff and a thank you note was read.
- Ken
Sheldon’s
Superintendent report:
- Budget is tight at this time because
of several factors. The
water heater from the kitchen needs replacing, price
of gas is up and the budget is behind.
- The Newburg Auction
Dinner went very well.
- Working on State requirement “Scope and Sequence” -a
process done every 4 years.
- Ken, Julie Douty and
John Mather will inform the teachers and staff what is
available to GFA special needs students; what signs and
symptoms to look for in kids and how to access services.
- Military
recruiters have requested a list of GFA Senior names and
the Board has decided to make military pamphlets
available to the students instead of releasing names.
- A
new senior student from California has joined GFA.
- The Idaho
Athletic Association (IHSAA) had determined GFA (small
division) compete with other small schools that are great
distances away from Greenleaf. Karri
Fisk is meeting with IHSAA on 12/6/07 in an effort
to change the schools to include those that are within
a more reasonable distance to GFA.
- A proposal for a Discipline
Coordinator was presented. This
position would include a 3-4 hour day at $10,000/year. Responsibilities
would include the following areas: tardy’s, discipline,
parent contact, records, coverage for Superintendent, detention
room, work with counselor, monitor chapel behavior.
- Gary Brown
suggested Ken’s proposal be approved in theory
and that the Academic Committee, over the next few weeks, take
a look at the proposal in closer detail and make a suggestion
back to the Board. As mentioned above, if parents or teachers
would like to be a part of this review, contact Ken Sheldon.
- Board
training is being planned and a kick-off on this will be scheduled
before February 2008.
