Jeanie Hetrick welcomed everyone to the meeting and Byron Sheets opened with prayer.
Jeanie Hetrick reviewed the following minutes from January’s GFA PTF Meeting.
- The elementary school playground equipment project is in progress.
- Teaching Spanish to pre-school children is continuing and working out well.
- The Student Affairs Committee and Julie Douty are reviewing the Student-Parent Handbook. The PTF has requested that the Student Affairs Committee provide suggestions on how parents can be involved with Handbook changes/ suggestions in the future. Julie has asked the GFA Board how they would like to handle this, and we will be hearing back from the Board on this issue.
- At the December PTF meeting, discussion was held over better utilization of a student’s detention time. Jeanie Hetrick met with Mr. Sheldon and learned that the Handbook has a Detention Policy in place with Deidre Brown (Bookkeeper), Pam Mavencamp, John Ehrlich, and Ellen Morse on the Disciplinary Committee. Each behavioral detention is for 20 minutes. If a student accrues 100 minutes or more of detention within a semester, the student will be issued an in-house suspension, and these will be served in the library. For more details on the Detention Policy, please refer to pages 46-47 in the 2006-2007 Handbook.
In addition, there is a lack of available teachers and/or parents available to serve in a supervisory role with student’s serving detention after school or on weekends. If parents would like to volunteer to help in this effort, please contact the school office.
- The Mom’s In Touch Prayer Group meets at GFA every Friday from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM in the Elementary Choir Room. If you can't meet with the group, please contact April Sheets, your prayers are desired. The goal for Mom’s in Touch is to have groups of moms praying for GFA all the time.
New Business
- Judi Magee reported that the first check has been received towards GFA’s Endowment.
- The GFA board has approved the removal of the carpeting and painting of the cement on the lower level floor. ACTION: PTF to determine work date for this task during Spring Break.
- JoAnn Behrends, Quaker Village 2007 Auction Coordinator, provided an Auction update.
- Classroom contact individuals are still needed for the 3rd, 9th, and 11th grades. If you can volunteer to be a classroom contact person, please let JoAnn know by leaving her a message at the school office.
- Donation letters have been mailed out and follow-up phone calls are being made at this time.
- Large corporations are being contacted to solicit their participation in the form of booth sponsorship.
- Auction set-up help and painting of booths are needed for the weekend of March 3rd. Please contact JoAnn via the school office if you can help.
- JoAnn asked for comments on changing one of the Auction menu items from BBQ Hamburgers and French fries to subway sandwiches. ACTION: Jeanie Hetrick to check on the cost difference between hamburger meat and lunchmeat.
- A 4-wheeler has been purchased for the Auction’s top raffle item.
- A gigantic bear has been donated for a raffle item as well as a home office for this year’s Auction.
- Nine rolls of wallpaper have been donated to be used in upgrading the Teacher’s Lounge. ACTION: PTF to determine a work date for this task. Probably slotted for a summer project.
- Suggestions were submitted, but not discussed at this meeting. They will be addressed at the March PTF meeting.
Review of January’s GFA Board Meeting Minutes by Jeanie Hetrick:
- The new head of GFA’s Endowment Fund, Maurice Chandler, provided a detailed plan of his goals and responsibilities.
- The Academic Affairs Committee completed a policy regarding Sports Eligibility Requirements. Currently if a student is placed on academic probation, the student is not permitted to participate in any sports activity until their academics are up to minimum standard. The new policy, which was passed by the Board, will allow the student to participate in practice with some restrictions. We will obtain the approved policy and read it at the next meeting.
New Discussion
Jeanie Hetrick announced that Mr. Sheldon’s contract will not be renewed based on a decision made by GFA’s Board of Trustees. This information was provided to the Staff and Faculty in the afternoon on February 5, 2007.
Many individuals expressed their disappointment with the Board’s decision. It was agreed that a letter should be written to all parents and faculty inviting them to discuss their concerns with the Board of Trustees at a special meeting to be held on Monday, February 12, 2007, 7:00 PM, in the School Dining Hall.
The next PTF meeting will be on Monday, March 5, 2007 at 7:00 PM in the school dining hall.
